Texans Steve Purcella and Casey Chamberlain rope record riches at 30th annual BFI in Reno

RENO, Nev. — After 20 years of trying, BFI veteran Steve Purcella finally finished first at the world’s richest one-day open roping thanks to a little heeling help from his friend and BFI rookie Casey Chamberlain. For roping six steers in 46.92

seconds, the talented Texans took the title at the 30th annual Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic and left the Reno Livestock Events Center loaded with a record $160,000-plus in cash and prizes. The BFI champs’ prize package included Running P saddles and breast collars, Gist buckles, Schneider three-piece buckles, Justin full-quill ostrich boots and Wrangler gift certificates.

The 2007 BFI paid out a record-smashing $680,000-plus in cash and prizes, thanks in part to a new entry-fee format in which contestant sponsors got in the game and helped raise the stakes. Purcella’s fees were sponsored by Fast Back Ropes, and Chamberlain’s charges were covered by Cactus Ropes, and Brett & Tyler Enterprises. An impressive 77 percent of this year’s teams were sponsored, and the BFI holds out just three percent for administrative fees.

“This is a great win,” said 1996 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Champion Team Roper Purcella, 40, who hangs his hat in Hereford, Texas. “I’ve had chances, and all kinds of things have kept me from winning this thing in the past. I finally pulled it off. This is definitely one of the biggest wins of my career. This roping is more intense than any other.”
